§2 - Revelation and Tradition

§2.1 - Introduction

“…Who spoke by the prophets” (Nicene Creed).

§2.1.1 - What is Revelation?

It is the divine means of communication, by which God has disclosed, or “revealed,” things to man. This, He has done through His Prophets,¹ and “in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son,”² our Lord Jesus Christ.

§2.1.2 What is Tradition?

This refers to the divine customs and beliefs— the doctrines of the Christian religion— which have been passed down from generation to generation, preserved through the unbroken, prophetic and apostolic lines of succession. There are two forms of tradition: written and oral.³

§2.1.3 - A Prayer For This Lesson

Lord, we thank you for revealing to us things which are good, true, and sufficient— and for preserving the same— for the sake of our salvation.

Teach us and help us understand Your way of revelation, that our faith may be strengthened, that we may be filled “with all joy and peace in believing, and that we may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”⁴

We pray these things, together with Your holy saints, in the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit— One God. Amen.
